Whether you’re thinking of eloping in the summer or the winter, Rocky Mountain National Park is an amazing spot! Most people think of the park when they think of Colorado and there’s a simple reason why. With it’s mountain views, beautiful trails, and the ability to spot some really cool wildlife, it’s the place to check out! Especially for couples looking to incorporate nature within their day.
I was excited beyond belief to capture this couple in the park! It was my first time photographing there and let me tell ya, it did not disappoint. Even with a huge snow storm, which did make visibility a bit difficult, it was such a magical day. If you’ve ever thought of getting married inside of a snow globe, this day was pretty much that. Due to the snow we couldn’t see much in terms of mountains in the background, but it didn’t even matter. We were still in this winter wonderland and it was perfect. The snow did make it a bit chilly and because it was February there was already a lot of old snow built up on the trails. If you’re willing to bear the cold and snow, Rocky Mountain in the winter is DEFINITELY worth it!
We started by parking at Bear Lake where we bundled up and got everything ready. There are only certain spots in the park where you’re allowed to have a ceremony. Bear Lake is one of those locations. If you’re interested in any of the others, check them out here. After hanging up their coats on a tree branch (these guys were troopers in the cold!) E + D walked out onto the lake, held hands and said their vows to each other while the snow came pouring down. They truly embraced the cold! After their vows were read with some intimate moments shared, we kept the adventure going and decided to hike to Dream Lake. Because of the time of year, there was already a lot of snow on the trail and more pouring down as we walked. Although it made it a little trickier to walk through (I suggest bringing snow shoes!) it was such a fun walk. What a way to celebrate your wedding day through a winter wonderland!
Dream lake has magnificent views, as does most of the park, and even with the low visibility you could still get a feel for how beautiful the spot was. We walked across the lake until we reached the farther end. I had E+D run through the snow, do their first dance and just enjoy being with each other. We captured some AMAZING photos that I am just obsessed with! They put up with the cold and had their jackets off (which is not required!) for most of the photos to which I applaud them for. Overall, E+D had a beautiful wintery day and I could not be happier with how their photos turned out!
Winter elopements are magical, especially if you’re prepared for the cold and possible snow. Remember to always bring layers and hand warmers! The little things make a big difference. There’s also always time to warm up, so no need to worry about being cold the whole day. My goal is to have you comfortable and having fun not to be miserable!
