I’ve known Kristen my whole life. Our mom’s have been best friends since they were super young, so when she asked me to take her engagement photos in Colorado of course I was so excited! They decided to fly out here from Chicago during the fall to experience our beautiful autumn colors. We chose Rocky Mountain National Park so we had plenty of spots to explore. They also wanted to check out Estes and make a trip out of coming out here. They stayed at the Estes Park Resort, which looked gorgeous, even in the complete darkness when I picked them up at 4am.
We decided to do a sunrise session, so I left in the early dark morning and made my way to Estes to go pick them up before we headed into the park. I always love starting out in the pitch black and slowly watching how the sky changes all around us as the light slowly appears. As we hiked to Dream Lake in the dark, we stayed bundled up and warm against the strong winds. Because I never want my couples to be rushed, we gave ourselves plenty of time to get to the lake and ended up with time to spare so we sat on some rocks and just took it all in while waiting for the sun to come up.
Once the light began to pop up and the glow appearing on the peaks our photos began. Kristen and Jake were so easy and fun to work with. They followed all my goofy prompts I threw their way and just had fun with it! Whenever I’m shooting during sunrise I’m always stunned by the colors and views we get, and somehow they are constantly getting better even when I think we’ve already seen the best. Photos in Rocky Mountain are never a disappointment that’s for sure. As the sun came up we continued down the trail for some other spots and views. Eventually we started to head back to the trailhead, stopping along the way to admire all of the cozy fall colors popping up throughout the park.
Adding an adventurous element to an engagement session is always an added bonus. Even just exploring the outdoors together, being curious, can be so fun. It adds laughter and some spontaneity throughout our session.
Rocky Mountain engagement photos are always so exciting because there is so much to explore in the park! It’s one of my favorite locations, especially in the fall when the colors are just breathtaking. But you really can’t go wrong with any time of year with those views.
